The Nature of Nurture
This collection of paintings were conceived when I noticed the small disk shaped seeds of the Iris pseudacorus (Yellow Flag) all neatly stacked together in their pods. After painting an opening pod, life sized, I felt it was too small to see what I wanted to show, thus came the expansion.
Something which was unexpected was the abstraction which comes from the expansion, the interesting way that by enlarging the subjects turns them into something new and almost alien or anatomical.
I like to really get ‘inside’ my specimens to show things which I see but can be hidden or overlooked, I get drawn in by the sculptural and often sensual shapes of the seeds and their casings.
